My engine is overheating: what to do and what to avoid

August 24, 2026·Updated October 17, 2026·4 min read·All tips

A temperature needle in the red is an emergency. Here are the right reflexes, and above all the mistakes not to make.

The first signs of overheating

The temperature needle climbs toward the red, a cloud of steam comes out from under the hood or a burning smell enters the cabin. These are warning signs to take seriously right away.

An overheating engine can reach destructive temperatures in under 2 minutes. Driving on can warp the cylinder head, a $2,000 to $5,000 repair.

What to do when it overheats

Follow these steps in order:

  • ✓1. Turn off the air conditioning immediately
  • ✓2. Turn the heater on full (it helps pull heat away from the engine)
  • ✓3. If that is not enough, pull over as soon as it is safe
  • ✓4. Shut off the engine and wait 20 to 30 minutes before opening the hood
  • ✓5. Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot: risk of serious burns
  • ✓6. Check the coolant level (in the clear reservoir, not the radiator)

The most common causes

Overheating is rarely sudden. There is an underlying cause:

  • ✓Coolant leak (punctured hose, failing head gasket)
  • ✓Thermostat stuck closed
  • ✓Cooling fan not working
  • ✓Clogged or damaged radiator
  • ✓Failing water pump

Prevention: have your cooling system checked

Have your cooling system inspected every 2 years or 40,000 km. Coolant breaks down over time, loses its anti-corrosion properties and can leave deposits that clog the radiator. A coolant flush costs between $80 and $150, far less than the consequences of overheating.
